OpossumThis is North America's only marsupial (pouched mammal). They have coarse gray-black fur, a pointed pink nose, and long tail with little fur. Opossum are omnivores, and will eat insects, smaller animals, bird's eggs, mushrooms, grains, fruit and carrion. They are nocturnal (active at night) and so rarely seen during the day. They live in fields and forests near water, but frequent areas where man is looking for food. Female opossum can have up to 14 kits in a litter, each only the size of your thumb. They spend the first several months of life in their mother's pouch and continue to stay with her for several weeks after emerging.
